NEW WORKS Last week Dennis C. Benson accepted the Wilbur Life Achievement Award on behalf of Fred Rogers. The Wilbur Award is bestowed by the Religious Communication Council.
At the Chicago event Dennis said: "A friend of mine was recently walking down a Pittsburgh street with Fred Rogers. Fred suddenly stopped, bent down and picked up a pacifier. He turned to my friend and said, 'Someone has lost something very important.'
Fred walked up the stairs to the porch of a nearby house. He rang the bell. A woman appeared and Fred said, 'Did someone in there lose this?' She said, 'Why yes. Thank you.'
Over the years I have been privileged to have been presented with eight Wilbur Awards for my work in radio and television. However, having the opportunity to accept this Award on behalf of Fred Rogers, my mentor and friend, gives me the greatest pleasure of all. So on behalf of the children of the world, and the child in each of us, thank you for honoring Fred Rogers."
